October 2, 1944 marked the end of the Warsaw Uprising, a two-month revolt led by the underground Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa or AK) to liberate Warsaw from German control. After some initial success by the Polish Home Army, the German army regained control over Warsaw during a brutal campaign in which thousands of people were killed and much of the Polish capital was destroyed.
