Quercus rubra, or Northern Red Oak, is a majestic native hardwood tree that can live over 200 years and grow up to 90 feet tall. Known for its strong reddish wood and brilliant red fall foliage, it’s one of the most iconic and ecologically valuable trees in eastern North America. Its acorns provide essential food for wildlife like deer, squirrels, and birds, while its leaves support hundreds of native caterpillars that feed songbirds. Fast-growing and adaptable to a variety of soils, the Norther

The willow oak (Quercus phellos) is a state-endangered species in Pennsylvania (rank S2). It occurs rather abundantly in the tiny sliver of the Atlantic coastal plain that stretches into the very southeastern corner of PA. But because most of this coastal plain region in PA has been developed, fragmented, or otherwise extensively disturbed, their wild populations are relatively low in number. Willow oak does quite well as a street and landscape tree here in Philadelphia and suburbs (even into th

The PA state champion Post Oak (Quercus stellata) hasn’t been remeasured since 2001, so I went to check it out! It is now 24 points larger than in 2001, and continues to grow slowly. Check out @pabigtrees for more! The Post Oak is a native oak to the Eastern US, from central Texas up to parts of New England. It is not too common here in Pennsylvania, and is mostly found on dry ridge tops and barrens. Its drought tolerance is quite impressive! It is more of a medium-sized oak that rarely exceeds

This large, old, beautiful white oak (Quercus alba) unfortunately has some pretty extensive decay at its base. We used various tools to assess the extent of the internal decay and to determine if the tree has enough strong wood left to support itself for much longer. After collecting our data, we found that there is a large internal hollow that has significantly weakened the tree’s base. Using a well-known equation for strength loss, we determined that a significant portion of the tree’s strengt

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "Herbarium records from the early 1900s show that two locally uncommon oaks used to grow at one of my local Pennsylvania State Parks. The Blackjack oak (Quercus marilandica) and Post oak (Quercus stellata) were both documented growing in the direct area, but may have since been extirpated. This is likely due to fire suppression, mesophication, deer pressure, and invasive species, which have greatly altered the species found within the park. 🌳 So my non-profit (@commu

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "Have you ever noticed a smooth patch of bark on a white oak (Quercus alba) or post oak (Q. stellata)? If so, the tree may have been infected with Smooth Patch Disease (Aleurodiscus oakesii), a fungal disease that causes the mature, outermost bark to degrade off. Luckily, the disease is mostly harmless and has no direct health consequences. It decreases bark thickness, which can indirectly lower the tree’s ability to protect itself from mechanical injury. The fungus f
