In 1919, amid postwar Britain, Edward Elgar composed his Cello Concerto in E minor. Its premiere on 27 October, poorly prepared, was a failure, leaving the work neglected for decades. In 1965, 20-year-old Jacqueline du Pré made a legendary recording that revived the concerto. On 15 June 1967, she married Daniel Barenboim, touring globally with him. From 1971 she lost sensation in her fingers; in 1973 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, forcing retirement at just 28. She gave a few masterc
