This visualization shows total sea level change between 1992 and 2014, based on data collected from the TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1 and Jason-2 satellites. Blue regions are where sea level has gone down, and orange/red regions are where sea level has gone up. Since 1992, seas around the world have risen an average of nearly 3 inches. For over 20 years NASA has been tracking the global surface topography of the ocean to understand the important role it plays in our daily lives. Climate change is causing our ocean to warm and glaciers to melt, resulting in sea level rise. Since 1880, the global sea level has risen 8 inches; by 2100, it is projected to rise another 1 to 4 feet. Sea level update 🌊 In 2024, global sea level rose faster than expected mostly due to ocean water expanding as it warms, or thermal expansion. According to a NASA-led analysis, 2024’s rise was 0.23 in (0.59 cm) per year, compared to the expected rate of 0.17 in (0.43 cm) per year. In recent years, about two-thirds of sea level rise was from melting ice sheets and glaciers. About a third came from thermal expansion of seawater. But in 2024, those contributions flipped, with two-thirds of sea leve

For over 20 years, satellite altimeters have measured the sea surface height of our ever-changing oceans. This series of images shows the complicated patterns of rising and falling ocean levels across the globe from 1993 to 2015. Sea levels reflect changing currents (which tilt the sea surface), the redistribution of heat (which makes sea levels higher) and the long term rise in global sea levels that is the result of human-caused warming. The globally averaged rise is traced out in the bottom r

It's hard to "see" sea level rise by just looking at the ocean, but its effects are very real. A new video covers some of the basics. Related story: https://climate.nasa.gov/blog/2974/cant-see-sea-level-rise-youre-looking-in-the-wrong-place/ Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech | NASA Climate Change

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has revealed a chilling animation showcasing the sea level rise between 1993 and 2022. Over the past three decades, sea levels have increased by approximately 3.5 inches. NASA says the animation, designed to resemble a submerged boat porthole, acts as a strong visual representation of the alarming rise of sea levels over the years. #NASA | cheddar news

Sea level rise is happening all around the planet. Local weather patterns, currents & more can affect when and how high sea levels rise in different places. With NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's OceanWorks, researchers can look at how sea level rise is happening around the globe. https://go.nasa.gov/38lBZOX Ensuring that measurements of sea level from space are accurate requires us to know exactly where measurements were taken. Using a technique called Precise Orbit Determi
