Pushmataha (c. 1764 – December 24, 1824; also spelled Pooshawattaha, Pooshamallaha, or Poosha Matthaw) was one of the three regional chiefs of the major divisions of the Choctaw in the 19th century. Many historians considered him the "greatest of all Choctaw chiefs". [2] .

Dec 20, 2024 · Pushmataha was a Choctaw Indian chief whose compliance facilitated U.S. occupation of Indian land in the early 19th century. In 1805, shortly after being elected chief, he signed the Treaty of Mount Dexter, ceding much of his people’s land in Alabama and Mississippi for white occupancy.

Pushmataha was born about the year 1764, and at the age of twenty was a captain, or a war chief, and a great hunter. In the latter occupation he often passed to the western side of the Mississippi, to hunt the buffalo, upon the wide plains lying towards our southern frontier.

Peter Perkins Pitchlynn was the Choctaw Principal Chief from 1864-1866. While aiding the United States troops he was so rigid in his discipline that he soon succeeded in converting his wild warriors into efficient soldiers, while for his energy in fighting the Creeks and Seminole he became popularly known to the whites as “The Indian General.”
