Wednesday marked exactly one month since congestion pricing started in New York City. It’s the nation’s first and only tolling plan of its kind, and new numbers show that not only is it having a dramatic impact on the roads,

Congestion pricing began on January 5. One month in, traffic is down, public buses are faster, and transit ridership is up.

Pedestrian traffic on New York City’s busiest streets increased in January even after motorists began paying a new toll to drive into those same neighborhoods.

According to the MTA, inbound trips from the Hudson and East Rivers were 10 to 30 percent faster than last year. Those driving in the congestion relief zone (all local streets below 59th) saw travel time improvements as high as 59 percent during afternoon peak hours, the MTA said.

The New York City tolling program began on Jan. 5 after defying obstacles for decades. A move to stop it would likely touch off a legal battle between the state and federal government.

On Jan. 27, Murphy announced New Jersey is updating its pending lawsuit over congestion pricing with new claims that Federal Highway Administration actions last year approving both the start of congestion pricing as well as last-minute changes N.Y. officials made to the tolling plans were approved without appropriate environmental reviews.

Early data shows the program is reducing traffic, boosting subway use, improving travel times and even gaining support from those who pay the toll.
