Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Michigan parents starting back-to-school shopping should expect to pay more for backpacks and shoes as a result of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Price hikes are in the mid-single digits across categories, a spokesperson for the company said. Consumer goods, food and drink companies have struggled with lackluster sales since the pandemic, as shoppers have balked at increasingly expensive name-brand packaged food.

The move marks a sharp escalation in Trump’s longstanding effort to reshape global trade, signaling a shift toward universal tariffs for nations that do not individually negotiate terms with the U.S.
