The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday it will hold a meeting of experts on May 22 to discuss COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for the upcoming immunization campaign. The meeting comes after the appointment of Martin Makary as FDA commissioner.

The advisory committee meeting is an important step in the process of readying boosters for the fall and winter season, but will take place amid newly imposed scrutiny of COVID shots.

Novavax's COVID vaccine was approved under an emergency use authorization in August 2022, and the company has pursued full licensing with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which gave the company a decision date of April 1 based on the Prescription Drug User Fee Act.
