Multiple wildfires burning near Custer and Hot Springs, South Dakota, prompted evacuations, road closures and a large emergency response as crews work to protect homes in the southern Black Hills.

Any hopes of a winter front providing some much-needed relief were dashed as winds escalated across west central Nebraska and fires raged on.
