Linker works at a department that specialises in implanting loop recorders and says they carry out about two or three procedures a week.

The loop recorder was made available commercially on May 5 and Mr Jack was the first patient to receive the procedure in a public hospital.

Physiologists have been fully-trained by Dr Sajjad Mazhar to insert the implantable loop recorder just below the skin of the chest in a quick and simple outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic.

The implantable loop recorder is a small device implanted beneath the skin above her heart. The procedure was a minimally invasive surgery that took about 15 minutes to install.
