STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Staten Island Animal Care Center facility on the borough’s South Shore is facing a capacity crisis. Data surrounding the crisis was given to the Advance/SILive.com on Tuesday by an ACC spokesperson, who detailed the dire state the site has found itself in.
West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes across New York City, according to the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. No human cases of the illness have been reported, but it has been found in all boroughs except for Manhattan.
Murders on Staten Island have surged 129% so far this year over last year, to 16 from 7. Major crimes are up in every category and 17% overall, according to NYPD data through Sept. 10.
The free gathering, which took place on Friday, July 18, on the South Meadow of Snug Harbor, invited families to meet their neighbors and come together to jump, run, cool off, and play in more than 30 sprinklers.
Health officials told Lucy’s owners that she would have to leave the city. After the family, the neighborhood and its political representatives protested, a temporary reprieve emerged.
