Donald Trump will not be able to force Greenland to change ownership, a former top adviser to the US president has told the BBC. IBM's vice chairman Gary Cohn, who advised Trump on the economy in his first term, said "Greenland will stay Greenland" and linked the need for access to critical minerals to his former boss's plans for the territory.
He said he no longer thought "purely of Peace" as the row over the island threatened to reignite a trade war with Europe.
Denmark deploys additional troops to Greenland after President Donald Trump claims the island is not secure from Russia or China.

In August 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported on Trump’s designs on Greenland for the first time, with the president confirming that he was interested in purchasing the territory. The Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, dismissed the idea as “absurd”. Trump lashed out, cancelling a planned trip to Denmark and calling Frederiksen “nasty”.
