One judge wrote in the ruling that politics played a role in drawing the new map, which was passed by the Republican-controlled legislature. The judge also found that substantial evidence shows Texas racially gerrymandered the map.

A federal court in El Paso ruled that the redistricting backed by Trump and Republicans to reshape the map for the 2026 midterms illegally weakened the voting power of minorities.

Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu, who largely spearheaded Texas House Democrats' efforts to flee the state and break quorum in protest of the map, said the Trump-appointed federal judge's decision "stopped one of the most brazen attempts to steal our democracy that Texas has ever seen."
