Russian troops have advanced at a glacial pace in recent months, but gains in southern and eastern Ukraine could give Moscow an edge in U.S.-mediated peace talks.

Ukraine’s goal is to make the war futile for Russia by minimizing territorial losses, pushing Russian casualties higher than the numbers Moscow can recruit, and increasing the economic costs such that the war is unsustainable.

Russia does not hide the fact that it took children under its control, but says it did so for their own safety, moving them away from the frontline and is willing to return them in cases where relatives come forward and can be verified.
